The Preservation of Our Republic is Our Responsibility
The Conservative Voice site is undergoing a change in response to the current political, sociological upheaval in the United States. The creator of this site remains a Conservative, a believer in smaller government, lower taxes, and strict adherence to the Constitution. Neither Republican nor Democrat. For the sake of clarity, the author admits having voted for Donald Trump in this past election. For the current state of affairs, I hold both Democrats and Republicans equally responsible. The Republicans presented us with a pre-ordained populist demagogue, while the Democrats presented us with an inept candidate lacking in any vision. So, the choice was made, and now comes the time to address that poor choice made.
We are always faced with choices. Now the options may be the most momentous we have ever faced, maybe as great a choice as the Colonists faced in 1775. The election of Donald Trump is as fraught with peril as the lead up to the American Revolution. The very denial of liberty witnessed by colonials is what drove them to rebellion. The tyranny inflicted by the British King became too burdensome in the American Colonies. At that point, rebellion became the necessity. Once again, we are witness to the assault on our most cherished liberties. We are faced with a new tyranny by new monarch. As a nation, we have not faced since the Civil War, a peril as great as Trump presents. It is abundantly clear that Trump is destroying the foundations of the Constitution and attacking the Separation of Powers that provides us with the necessary checks and balances on each branch of government.
We must all see the threats to not only our everyday lives, but to the entire fabric of American democracy…the Republic is in danger. We are not in imminent danger from some foreign adversary; to the contrary, we are in a clear and present danger from a megalomaniac WE have put in place. We are now in the position making a choice…a republic or a dictatorship.
On the last day of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Benjamin Franklin said, “A republic, if you can keep it”. in the Spring of 2025, we are failing.
“We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution,” (Abraham Lincoln). This applies as well to the Executive who perverts the Constitution.
Donald Trump is precisely the kind of President which Benjamin Franklun and Abraham Lincoln warned us about.
Now, today, has become the time for all Americans to stand and be counted. Do we stand on the side of equal justice, the rule of law, fairness to all, the assurances that the United States is a beacon of freedom, or do we stand for chaos, deprivation of equal rights, afflicting the less fortunate, the secret police in the night?
Make no mistake, no matter which side you are on, the United States is plummeting into the abyss of totalitarianism. No reasonable person, left or right, can honestly say that what we are seeing a leader, a visionary, working for the betterment of the country. Any reasonable person must see that Donald Trump appeals to the most base instincts which, for generations, Americans have struggled to control with periods of great success. Are we now to tear apart all of the work to make this “a more perfect union” and descend back into the depths of our failures? Are we now at the point where a wannabe dictator assaults all of the institutions and the founding premises of our Constitution? Donald Trump envisions, and works to implement ideas and practices which run counter to that Constitution and the conservative, moderate nature of American society?
The words of Thomas Paine in “The Crisis No. 1” ring as true today as they did in 1776.
“THESE are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.
Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.
What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.”
Thomas Jefferson once advised, “When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty.”
The time has come to resist!
